Sudden storm claims life

A 42-year-old worker was killed by lightning and another injured in Sunday’s freak storm as they travelled on a motorbike through a salt field near Kep town in the country’s south.

According to police official Mom Sitha, the bolt struck the driver of the motorbike as strong winds began to pick up.

The motorbike crashed, leaving the passenger injured and unconscious.

The storm, which hit various parts of the country in the late afternoon and early evening, also wreaked havoc in the capital.

Phnom Penh authorities said that 78 houses were damaged by strong winds and heavy rain.

As a result of the storm, more than 10 houses in Yurk Bat village, Meanchey district, were destroyed.

“We visited victims of the disaster and distributed first-aid donation to them,” Meanchey Governor Kouch Charmroeu said. Keo Vy, deputy information director of the National Disaster Management Committee, told the Post yesterday that from January 1 until the end of October, lightning strikes had killed 100 people and wounded 70.

With the latest death, that figure stands at 101.

Lightning had also struck and killed a number of animals throughout the course of the year, Vy said.

“But I am optimistic that there will be no more accidents of that sort.

“The rainy season is drawing to an end.”

The majority of strikes, according to government figures, occur in Pursat, Kampong Cham, Prey Veng and Takeo provinces.

As a result, government officials have concentrated most of their education campaigns in those areas.

In 2011, 165 people were hit and killed by lightning, while 139 were injured as a result of being struck.
