Phnom Penh: At the end, judges of the Appeal court decided to cut short Mam Sonando’s jail term to 8 months. The term of this new decision will end his jail term on 15 March 2013 and he will be released on 16 March 2013.
During the hearing held on 14 March 2013 for Mam Sonando and two other
villagers from Proma village, judge Khun Leang Meng decided to reduce
Mam Sonando’s 20-year jail sentence to 5 years. However, the sentence
will be upheld for 8 months only. Since he was detained since 15 July
1012, his sentence will end on 15 March 2013.
Furthermore, the two Proma villagers who were also sentenced with Mam
Sonando saw their sentence reduced to 5 years and their sentence will be
upheld for 10 months only, counting from the day of their arrest. They
will be released on 16 March 2013 also.
For Mam Sonando, the judge decided to change his accusation of forming a
secession zone against the government to forest destruction involved in
the land dispute in Proma village, Kampong Damrey commune, Chhlong
district, Kratie province during the period of April to May 2012.
The 72-year-old Mam Sonando was initially sentenced by the Phnom Penh
municipal court to 20 years of jail term for forming a secession zone
against the government. Mam Sonando was accused of being the ringleader
in forming a secession zone and fomenting insurrection, as well as
forming forces to fight against the government.
However, all accusations leveled against Mam Sonando were rejected by
Mam Sonando himself, as well as by the civil society. There was no
sufficient proof to charge Mam Sonando and the villagers.
