The former bedsit resident, 24, was speechless as he learned that he had gained more votes than runner up Jahmene Douglas.
He said: 'Thank you, thank you so much. Have I really won? Wow. I don't know what to say.'

Jahmene praised the winner and told Dermot: 'It's such a blessing to even share a stage with such a talent, he's my idol.'
James and Jahmene were seen locked in an emotional embrace as the result was revealed and it's clear the pair have bonded during their time together in this competition.
The Middlesbrough-born star, who won with 54 percent of the public vote, was presented with his winner's single, a cover of Shontelle's Impossible.

James' victory was watched by more than 10,000 fans at the Manchester Central venue, and there were a number of familiar faces in the crowd including professional footballers, soap stars and reality TV stars.

The former Asda worker took to the stage first to sing Robbie Williams' hit track Angels, and his performance left the panel gushing.
Tulisa told him: 'I'm really happy you picked that song.'
She added that he sounded 'amazing'.

Gary Barlow acknowledged Jahmene's tough start in life and said: 'You have been battling with your past and fighting for your future you have done it with such dignity and grace.'

Jahmene's mentor couldn't fight back the tears and was seen breaking down as she listened to him sing.

Gary, who has backed James to win the show, said that James didn't need changing and he was 'ready right now'.

She added that she was 'humbled' and 'so blessed' to have worked with him.
The boys also performed a second time, singing their individual winner's singles.

The panel were clearly moved by the emotional performance with Louis telling him he has 'so much soul' while Gary described him as having 'an unbelievable voice'.

After performing the track Jahmene was shown footage of his family talking about him, which left him in tears. His mother was seen saying: 'You have brought a lot of happiness to the family.'

James was up next to peform Impossible by Shontelle as his winner's song.
Gary told him that he was so pleased with the way James hadn't changed throughout the competition.

James was the first to admit that he had come so far from his bedsit thanks to the competition but Nicole reinforced this.
She told him: 'You better get ready your life is never going to be the same after this.'
Ahead of the show Take Me Out Contestant and model Chanelle McCleary claimed that she was in a relationship with James and the pair plan to go public now the show has finished, according to reports.
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror she said: 'All my girlfriends are jealous.They all love him and who can blame them. He’s a babe and the most genuine guy I’ve met.'
The star-studded X Factor final saw plenty of quality acts take to the stage including former contestants One Direction.

Emile Sandé and Rihanna also took to the stage to perform at the Manchester Central arena.
Most of the finalists who made it through to the live shows were also present to perform All I Want Is Christmas.
Christopher Maloney who was kicked off the show on Saturday night was a no-show.

An X Factor spokesperson told MailOnline: 'Chris decided he no longer wanted to be part of The X Factor Final and has gone back to Liverpool.'
The Liverpudlian wannabe was allegedly angered when he realised he had only been given one line in the group medley, and 'stormed off' to his nearby hotel.
